1969 CHEROKEE PIPER 140B PROJECT, BEEN SITTING IN DRY CLIMATE, CHEAP!
THE CHEROKEE 140 IS THE ENTRY LEVEL CHEROKEE, USED FOR FLIGHT TRAINING AND PERSONAL FLYING.
FIRST OFFERED IN 1964 AS A LESS EXPENSIVE VERSION OF THE CHEROKEE 150, WHICH HAD A BENCH SEAT AND A SEPARATE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT DOOR LIKE THE 180 BUT WITH A 150 H.P. ENGINE, SO THE 140 IS A MODEL NUMBER BELOW THE 150, BUT IT STILL USES THE SAME TYPE LYCOMING 150 H.P. 4 CYLINDER ENGINE.
FROM 1964-1968 THE 140’S WERE VERY SIMILAR AIRPLANES IN EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES, BUT THE 1969 “B” MODEL, LIKE THIS ONE, HAD A HOST OF IMPROVEMENTS THAT MODERNIZED THE AIRPLANE, ESPECIALLY INSIDE!
ALL “B” MODEL 140’S, LIKE THIS ONE, USE THE LATER STYLE DASH LAYOUT THAT SOME PEOPLE THINK OF AS THE WARRIOR/ARCHER DASH, (BUT IT ACTUALLY STARTED EARLIER).
THE MAIN FEATURES ARE A QUADRANT THROTTLE AND MIXTURE CONTROLS (NO MORE PUSH PULL CABLES) AND A VERY CLEAN, MODERN 6 PACK GUAGE LAYOUT WITH ROOM FOR 2 VOR INDICATORS NEXT TO THE 6 PACK, THE TACH ON THE PILOT’S SIDE OF THE RADIO STACK FOR THE FIRST TIME AND 2 SIDE BY SIDE RADIO STACKS, SO THERE IS ROOM FOR ANY EQUIPMENT YOU WANT OR NEED!
LATE STYLE STRIP GUAGES AND ALL CIRCUIT BREAKERS, LARGE ROCKER SWITCHES IN 1 STRIP FOR ELECTRICAL CONTROL, ETC., ETC.!
THE 1969 “B” IS WHERE PILOT SIDE TOE BRAKES BECAME STANDARD AS WELL!
THE SEATS ARE NEW FOR 1969, WITH FLATTER, MORE MODERN CUSIONS YOU SINK INTO, NOT PERCH ON TOP OF!
THIS 1969 B MODEL 140 HAS BEEN SITTING FOR MANY YEARS IN THE ARID DESERT ENVIRONMENT OF THE DESERT OF PALM SPRINGS CALIFORNIA.
THE OWNER WAS OBVIOUSLY REFURBISHING THE INTERIOR BUT STOPPED, AND WAS UNABLE TO BE FOUND.
THE AIRPORT AUTHORITIES DID THE LEGAL DUE DILIGENCE AND TOOK POSSESSION OF THE AIRPLANE LEGALLY, THEN SOLD IT TO US, BUT THERE IS NO FAA PAPERWORK, NO LOGBOOKS AND NO HISTORY OF ANY KIND!
PAPERWORK WILL HAVE TO BE STARTED FROM SCRATCH, REGISTRATION APPLIED FOR, ETC., BUT THAT IS ALL DOABLE, IT IS NOT UNCOMMON, AND THIS AIRPLANE CAN FLY AGAIN LEGALLY!
IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE AIRPLANE RESCUE SHOWS ON T.V. OR ONLINE, YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO DO THE SAME THING, ONLY YOU GET TO START AT SUCH A LOW PRICE THAT YOU CAN’T LOSE!
WE ARE SELLING THIS AIRPLANE BELOW THE VALUE OF JUST A COUPLE OF THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS, SO YOU WOULD BE TAKING NO RISK AT ALL!!

ALMOST EVERYTHING IS THE SAME BETWEEN A 140B AND A 1966 OR NEWER 180, INCLUDING:
WINGS, FLAPS, AILERONS, ALL 3 LANDING GEAR, HORIZONTAL STABILATOR, RUDDER AND VERTICAL AND ENGINE MOUNT!!
THE FUSELAGE PIECES THEMSELVES ARE ALSO NEARLY THE SAME, EXCEPT THE 140B HAS NO BAGGAGE DOOR.
THE ENGINE, PROP AND EXHAUST ARE NO INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING, WHICH GIVES YOU A FEW CHOICES:
INSTALL A 150 H.P. 0-320 LIKE STOCK, A 160 H.P. 0-320 WHICH IS A CHEAP S.T.C. WITH NO AIRFRAME CHANGES REQUIRED, OR STEP UP TO THE 180 H.P. 0-360 LIKE THE 180, WHICH BOLTS RIGHT UP!!
AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PHOTOS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE ITEMS FORWARD OF THE ENGINE MOUNT, THIS IS A COMPLETE AIRPLANE.
THE MINOR EXCEPTIONS ARE THE REAR JUMPSEATS AND THE PLYWOOD BOARD THEY SIT ON, WHICH MAKES THE 140 A 2 + 2, AND THE DOOR LATCH HARDWARE, WHICH GOT LIBERATED SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY (I SUSPECT SOMEONE STOLE THE ORIGINAL DOOR, AND SOMEONE HUNG A DOOR WITHOUT LATCHES JUST TO FILL UP THE HOLE.)
THE REPLACEMENT DOOR IS CORRECT FOR THE AIRFRAME, JUST NEEDS THE LATCH HARDWARE.
ALL MODERN FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS ARE INSTALLED HERE, AS WELL AS 2 NAV-COMS WITH INDICATORS, AN AUDIO CONTROL PANEL WITH MARKER BEACONS AND A NARCO AT-150 MODE “C” TRANSPONDER.
A PORTABLE INTERCOM SYSTEM IS ALSO INCLUDED.
THE FRONT SEAT STRUCTURES LOOK GOOD, AND THE REAR SEATS ONLY COST $250 EACH, SO THERE ISN'T A BIG REASON NOT TO INSTALL THEM WHILE YOU ARE DOING THE REFURB!
THE HEADLINER AND SIDE PANELS ARE IN HORRIBLE SHAPE, BUT THE PLASTICS AND WINDOW TRIM LOOK PRETTY GOOD, SO ORDER UP AN AIRTEX COMPLETE KIT AND INSTALL IT ALL NEW!!
DUE TO THE DRY CLIMATE, THE ONLY OBVIOUS RUST OR CORROSION TO THE AIRPLANE IS THE STEP, BUT IT IS SURFACE RUST HERE, NOT EATEN THROUGH!
THE INTERIOR STRUCTURES AND EXTERIOR SURFACES DO NOT SHOW A CORROSION PROBLEM DUE TO THE DRY AIR.
BUT THE PAINT? THE SUN IS THE ENEMY HERE!
ALTHOUGH A PRETTY GOOD LOOKING 20 FOOTER, WITH THE MODERN SCHEME AND MODERN BRITE BLUE STRIPING, THE CLOSE UP PHOTOS SHOW THAT THE CLEAR COAT IS COMING OFF IN PLACES.
THE ONLY DAMAGE, HOWEVER, SEEMS TO BE TO THE AFTERMARKET HIGH LIFT WINGTIPS, WITH THE NOSE OF THE RIGHT TIP BEING DAMAGED.
THE WING LEADING EDGE AND STRUCTURE ITSELF IS NOT DAMAGED!
THE ENGINE WAS PROPERLY REMOVED, SO ALL OF THE CABLES AND LINES ARE INTACT.
NO ISSUES WITH THE FIREWALL!
NOT AN ACCIDENT, SO NO COWLING DAMAGE AS YOU WOULD EXPECT TO SEE IN A CRASH!
THE ONLY STICKY WICKET IS THE AIRPORT WANTS WHOMEVER WORKS ON THE AIRPLANE TO HAVE A $1,000,000 LIABILITY INSURANCE POLICY. NO ISSUE IF YOU HAVE ANY KIND OF COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISE, AS YOU PROBABLY ALREADY HAVE THIS, BUT YOU WILL NEED TO GET A SHORT TERM POLICY FOR THE TIME YOU ARE WORKING ON THE AIRPLANE IF YOU DON’T ALREADY HAVE ONE.
