United Instruments Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI), also known as a rate of climb and descent indicator (RCDI)

Instrument Details

* Function: The VSI measures and displays the aircraft's rate of ascent or descent in feet per minute (fpm) by sensing changes in outside ambient static air pressure.

* Indication: When the aircraft is in level flight, the needle points to the "0" mark. During a climb, the needle moves to the "UP" section, and during a descent, it moves to the "DOWN" section, indicating the speed of vertical movement.

* Operation: It operates as a differential pressure instrument using only the static pressure from the aircraft's pitot-static system. Air is routed into an internal diaphragm and a sealed case through a calibrated leak, which creates a pressure differential when altitude changes. This differential is translated into a needle movement by mechanical linkage.
