FROM THE BEGINNING, THE M20 SERIES COULD GO MUCH FASTER ON IT’S 150 H.P. LYCOMING THAN ANY OF IT’S COMPETITION, AND AS THE ENGINE SIZE INCREASED TO 180 H.P., THEN 200 HORSEPOWER, THE M20 COULD STILL WHIP ANYBODY IN SPEED PER HORSEPOWER!
WITH THE ADVENT OF THE GROUND-BREAKING 201 IN 1977, THE SLIGHTLY LARGER FUSELAGE, WITH MUCH BETTER REAR LEGROOM, A BETTER DASH LAYOUT AND AERODYNAMIC CLEANUPS THAT PUT THE “MORE SPEED PER HORSEPOWER” TROPHY PERMANENTLY IN MOONEY’S DISPLAY CASE, IT SEEMED LIKE THERE WAS NOWHERE ELSE TO GO.
UNTIL MOONEY INTRODUCED TURBOCHARGING!!
IN 1979, THE 231 JUMPED INTO ANOTHER CATEGORY ALTOGETHER, PUNCHING FAR ABOVE IT’S WEIGHT CLASS!
FOR 7 YEARS, THE 231 WAS THE FASTEST 4 PLACE AIRPLANE AVAILABLE WITH 210 HORSEPOWER OR LESS!
BUT USING SIMILAR AERODYNAMIC MAGIC TO THAT WHICH MADE THE 201 OUT OF THE M20F, AND WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM CONTINENTAL’S NEW INDUCTION SYSTEM AND AN INTERCOOLER FOR THE TURBO, THE 252 TSE (TURBO SPECIAL EDITION) BECAME THE TOP OF THE PYRAMID FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS OF “MID-BODY” PRODUCTION!
EASILY IDENTIFIED AT A GLANCE BY THE ROUNDED CORNERS OF THE SIDE WINDOWS, THE 252 CAME WITH SPEED BRAKES, ALMOST A NECESSITY FOR A FAST HIGH ALTITUDE AIRPLANE, AS WELL AS A LARGE, BUILT-IN OXYGEN SYSTEM!
ONLY 230 252’S WERE MADE IN THEIR 5 YEAR PRODUCTION, SO THE 252 IS ABOUT AS RARE AS THE 400 COMANCHE WE SOLD LAST MONTH (148 MADE):
BOTH ARE THE TOP OF THE PYRAMID AIRPLANE FOR IT’S RESPECTIVE OWNER GROUP!
THIS 252 SUFFERED FROM A PILOT PROBLEM, NOT A MECHANICAL PROBLEM.
THE LONG TIME MOONEY PILOT MADE 2 CRITICAL ERRORS:
 
HE RAN 1 TANK OUT OF FUEL (YOU HAVE TO BE PRETTY DESPERATE TO DO THAT).
HE THEN SWITCHED TO THE OTHER TANK AND TRIED TO MAKE IT HOME, INSTEAD OF THE CLOSEST SAFE SPOT. That is not just desperate, that is an error in judgement!
HE RAN OUT OF FUEL JUST SHORT OF HIS DESTINATION!!!
THE FIELD HE PICKED WAS FLAT ENOUGH AND LONG ENOUGH, SO HE LANDED ON THE GEAR AND WOULD HAVE BEEN OK, IF NOT FOR THE T-POST FENCE ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH THE FIELD!
THOSE T POSTS ARE PRETTY TOUGH ON WING LEADING EDGES!
BOTH SIDES OF THE 1 PIECE WING HAVE SERIOUS IMPACT DAMAGE AND THE RIGHT WING HAS A CUT UNDERNEATH AS WELL!
THE FLAPS AND LANDING GEAR DO NOT SHOW ANY DAMAGE, BUT THE RIGHT AILERON IS DAMAGED AND THE OUTBOARD GEAR DOORS ON BOTH SIDES HAVE A FEW SMALL TWEAKS. THE SPECIAL INBOARD DOORS THAT ONLY A 252 HAS ARE UNDAMAGED!
THE FIBERGLASS LOWER COWL IS INTACT BUT IS CRACKED ON THE RIGHT SIDE LOWER. VERY REPAIRABLE!
THE TOP COWL IS UNDAMAGED.
THE FIREWALL IS ALSO UNDAMAGED, AND IN FACT THERE IS NO DAMAGE OF ANY KIND TO THE FUSELAGE, FROM FRONT TO BACK!
IN ORDER TO MOVE THE AIRPLANE FROM THE FIELD, THE SHOP THAT HAD BEEN DOING MAINTENANCE AND ANNUALS ON THIS AIRPLANE DRILLED OUT THE RIVETS ON THE TAILCONE AND SEPERATED IT FROM THE FORWARD FUSELAGE, JUST AFT OF THE CABIN.
THIS IS THE PROPER METHOD OF TRANSPORTING A MOONEY, AND THE SHOP KNOWS MOONEYS AND DID A GOOD JOB OF SEPERATING THE TAILCONE SO THERE IS NO FURTHER DAMAGE.
THE TAIL FEATHERS ON A MOONEY, ANY MOONEY, ARE EASY TO REMOVE IN ONE PIECE, WHICH THEY ALSO DID.
THE TAIL FEATHERS DO NOT SHOW ANY IMPACT DAMAGE.
SOME OF THE FEATURES ON THIS PARTICULAR AIRPLANE ARE FAIRLY STANDARD FOR A 252, AS MOST OF THE 252 FLEET WERE PRETTY DELUX FROM THE FACTORY, BUT THIS AIRPLANE IS TOP OF THE LINE ALL THE WAY!!
INTERESTINGLY, SINCE THE 252 AND THE M20F, M20G, M20J (201), M20K (231) ARE BASED ON THE SAME FUSELAGE, ALL OF THE VERY COOL FEATURES OF THIS 252 WILL FIT THE OLDER AIRPLANES, ALL THE WAY BACK TO 1967!
AND COOL FEATURES ABOUND ON THIS AIRPLANE!!!
OUTSIDE, THERE ARE SPEED BRAKES!
AND UPSWEPT WINGTIPS WITH ENCLOSED LIGHTS (LEFT TIP HAS SOME FIBERGLASS CRACKING AT THE REAR, BUT IS INTACT, AND VERY EASILY REPAIRABLE).
THIS AIRPLANE IS EQUIPPED WITH A 1 PIECE FIBERGLASS BELLY, WHICH IS INTACT AND UNDAMAGED! FASTER IN CRUISE THAN THE INDIVIDUAL LAPPED AND SCREWED BELLY SKINS, AND FAR BETTER/EASIER FOR MAINTENANCE.
AND THEN THERE ARE ALL THE GOODIES INSIDE!
START WITH THE SEATS!
ALTHOUGH THE SAME GENERAL SIZE AS THE 67-84 SEATS, EACH OF THESE FRON SEATS IS MULTI-ADJUSTABLE, INCLUDING NORMAL FORE-AFT, PLUS VERTICALLY ADJUSTING FOR TALL OR SHORTER THAN AVERAGE, PLUS INFINITE BACKREST ANGLE ADJUSTMENT!
THESE SEATS WERE NOT OFFERED UNTIL THE MID 80’S AND FEW ORDERED THEM BECAUSE OF THE HIGH COST, SO THEY ARE RARELY AVAILABLE AND ALWAYS EXPENSIVE!
THE REAR SEATS ON THE 84 AND UP MOONEYS, INCLUDING THIS 252, ARE INDIVIDUAL BUCKETS WITH NICE BOLSTERS THAT ARE DESIGNED WITH A SPECIAL SUPPORT THAT ALLOWS THE REAR SEAT FULL SIZED BOTTOMS TO BE REMOVED WITH VELCRO, WHICH THEN ALLOWS THE SEATBACKS TO FOLD FORWARD INDIVIDUALLY INTO THE WELL FORMERLY OCCUPIED BY THE BOTTOM.
THIS PROVIDES A NOW FLAT FLOOR IN THE ENTIRE AREA BEHIND THE FRONT SEATS, BLENDING INTO THE EXISTING BAGGAGE AREA, FOR HAULING LARGER OR LONGER ITEMS WITH EASE!
NO COMPARISON WITH THE BENCH REAR SEAT OF MOST MOONEYS, EVEN 201’S.
EASY TO CONVERT BACK IN FORTH IN 2-3 MINUTES, AND CAN FOLD ONLY 1 FLAT AND USE THE OTHER!!

A WING FROM A 231 IS THE SAME EXCEPT FOR THE INBOARD GEAR DOORS, AND THAT AREA DOES NOT HAVE ANY DAMAGE ON THIS AIRCRAFT, SO A WING SWAP MAKES SENSE!
OR OF COURSE, SOMEONE WITH A MID-BODY MOONEY (M20F, G, J OR K/231) MIGHT CONSIDER ALL OF THE SPECIAL FEATURES ON THIS AIRCRAFT TO BE DESIREABLE TO INSTALL ON THEIR AIRCRAFT, TO MAKE IT “THE TOP” AS WELL!

THE ORIGINAL LOGBOOK WAS LOST BY THE OWNER IN 1994, WITH A STATEMENT IN THE 1994 LOG COPY THAT STATES TACH TIME IS TOTAL TIME ( 1,389 AT THAT TIME) AND THE AIRCRAFT HAD NO DAMAGE HISTORY. THESE LOG COPIES GO TO 2010.
A NEW SHOP STARTED A NEW LOGBOOK IN 2011, AND THIS SHOP DID MOST OF THE MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTIONS UNTIL THE MOST RECENT ANNUAL, WHICH JUST EXPIRED DECEMBER OF 2024!
