1964 PIPER COMANCHE 400, TWIN TURBO, SUPER RARE AND DESIREABLE AIRFRAME, DAMAGED, CHEAP!
THE COMANCHE WAS PIPER’S FIRST ALL METAL SINGLE ENGINED AIRPLANE WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT IN 1958, WITH A LAMINAR FLOW WING, RETRACTABLE TRICYCLE GEAR, AND PLENTY OF ROOM FOR 4!
DESIGNED AS A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE TO THE V TAILED BONANZA, THE FAR CHEAPER TO PURCHASE AND OPERATE COMANCHE WAS ALWAYS A LITTLE BEHIND THE BONANZA IN PERFORMANCE.
UNTIL “PUG” PIPER, SON OF PIPER’S FOUNDER AND A FORCE BEHIND THE COMANCHE AND OTHER PIPER PRODUCTS OF THE 50’S AND 60’S, DECIDED TO MAKE A “HOTROD” VERSION OF THE COMANACHE FOR HIMSELF, IN ORDER TO ALLOW HIM TO TRAVEL QUICKLY AND NON-STOP BETWEEN THE LOCKHAVEN PENNSYLVANIA FACTORY AND THE NEW PIPER FACILITY IN VERO BEACH FLORIDA!
JUST LIKE THE PONTIAC GTO THAT CAME OUT IN 1964, PIPER TOOK THE LARGEST ENGINE AVAILABLE, LYCOMING’S NEW FOR ’64 8 CYLINDER IO-720, AND FITTED IT TO A COMANCHE!
WITH A HIGH G LIMIT ALREADY PROVEN FOR THE COMANCHE AIRFRAME, IT WASN’T A BIG TRICK TO ADD MORE FUEL TO THE WING TANKS AND UP THE USEFUL LOAD TO ACCEPT THE NEW ENGINE.
AND THE PERFORMANCE PUT THE BONANZA TO SHAME!

RATE OF CLIMB OVER 1,600 FEET A MINUTE

THE STANDARD “400” CAME WITH 100 GALLONS OF IN WING FUEL, BUT MANY, IF NOT MOST, WERE UPGRADED TO THE LONG RANGE FUEL CELLS, HOLDING 130 GALLONS!!
THIS AIRCRAFT HAS THE 130 GALLON FUEL OPTION!
BUT THAT ISN’T WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL!
THIS AIRCRAFT, FOR SALE NOW, HAS HAD THE VERY RARE “TWIN TURBO” CONVERSION ADDED!!
RAJAY, KNOWN FOR THEIR COMPACT, LIGHTWEIGHT SMALL TURBO CHARGERS, WHICH PIPER USED FOR THE TURBO TWIN COMANCHE AND THE TURBO AZTEC, DEVISED AN STC INSTALLATION FOR THE 400 COMANCHE, USING 2 TURBOCHARGERS, ONE FOR EACH SIDE, CONTROLLED BY AN EXTRA “THROTTLE KNOB” WHICH ALLOWS THE PILOT TO ADD IN BOOST AS DESIRED, WHEN DESIRED!!.
PROPERLY CLASSIFIED AS TURBO NORMALIZERS, THEY WERE NOT INTENDED TO INCREASE THE BOOST VERY MUCH OVER THE STANDARD ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE, SO NO ENGINE MODS WERE REQUIRED, BUT IT ALLOWED FULL POWER TO BE CARRIED INTO THE TEENS, AND INCREASED THE CLIMB RATE TO CLOSE TO 2,500 FT PER MINUTE!
I HAVE SEEN OWNERS OF TURBO 400’S CLAIM THE TOP SPEED IS NOW INCREASED TO 250 KNOTS AT ALTITUDE! !!
THE FEW 400 COMANCHES THAT WERE CONVERTED TO TWIN TURBO ARE VERY PROPERLY KNOWN AS “SUPER 400’S”
NOT THE N NUMBER WITH "400" IN IT, SO PASSERSBY WILL NOT HAVE ANY DOUBT!
THIS AIRCRAFT WAS THE MOST RECENT OWNER’S PRIDE AND JOY, AND HE LAVISED IT WITH MONEY AND ATTENTION!
AS MANY “400” OWNERS HAVE DONE, THE HEAVY 3 BLADE HARTZELL PROP WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW, LIGHTER, 3 BLADE MT COMPOSITE PROP.
A BEAUTIFUL 2 TONE GREY LEATHER INTERIOR, WHICH INCLUDES CARBON FIBRE ACCENTS!
A REVISED DASH, AGAIN WITH A CARBON FIBRE LOOK!
THE DASH IS EQUIPPED WITH A KING ELECTRIC HIS SYSTEM, MATCHING KING ATTITUDE INDICATOR AND CENTURY 3 ALTITUDE HOLD AUTOPILOT WITH VERTICAL SPEED CONTROL AND RADIO COUPLING!
OTHER MODS TO THE AIRCRAFT INCLUDE UPSWEPT WINGTIPS AND A 1 PIECE ARAPAHO WINDSHIELD, AMONG OTHER FEATURES.
THIS AMAZING AIRCRAFT UNFORTUNATELY SUFFERED DAMAGE DURING LANDING, WHEN THE PILOT MISJUDGED THE APPROACH AND LANDED JUST SHORT OF THE ACTUAL RUNWAY AND HIT THE APPROACH LIGHT SYSTEM.
AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE INCLUDED PHOTOS I TOOK, THE NOSEGEAR CHROME BROKE OFF, ALLOWING THE NOSE TO GO DOWN, WHICH SHEARED THE FIBERGLASS COVERED WOODEN BLADES OF THE MT PROP.
THE RIGHT GEAR FOLDED BACK INTO THE WELL, ALLOWING THE RIGHT WING TO HIT THE GROUND, CAUSING BUCKLES AT MIDSPAN.
THE LEFT WING GEAR REMAINED UP, SO THE LEFT WING ONLY HAS 2 IMPACT DENT ON THE INBOARD LEADING EDGE, WHERE IT IMPACTED THE LIGHTS.
THE LOWER COWLING IS SCRAPED, BUT THE BELLY AFT OF THE FIREWALL IS BARELY TOUCHED.
THE RIGHT FLAP AND AILERON AND THE LEFT FLAP ARE DAMAGED.
THE FUSELAGE ITSELF HAS NO DAMAGE, NO GLASS DAMAGE, THE DOOR FITS WELL, AND THE TAILFEATHERS AND TAILCONE ARE UNDAMAGED!
THE 2 TONE LEATHER INTERIOR, WITH CUSTOM HIGHBACK SEATS AND FANCY TRIM AROUND ALL THE WINDOWS, IS AWESOME!
THIS AIRFRAME IS BEING SOLD WITH THE TWIN TURBO SETUP, INCLUDING EXHAUST MANIFOLDS, BUT NOT THE IO-720 A1B ENGINE ITSELF!!
NO ENGINE IS INCLUDED IN THIS SALE!!
