WWII Part - Kollsman USN Airspeed Indicator Gauge F4U F6F SBD F4F PV-2 SB2C PB4Y
One nice Air Speed Indicator for the US Navy as manufactured by Kollsman Instrument and used in a wide variety of fighters, transports and bombers.
Rated in knots, it's intially confusing to the uninitiated. Speed between 0-200 knots is read on the outer pointer arrow clockwise along the outer perimeter scale, from 0-360 degrees. Once past 12 o'clock position, speed is then read from 200 knots to 430 knots on the inner pointer arrow along the inner scale.
So you'd have found this beastie in the F4U, F6F, SBD, SB2C, F4F, PV-2 and PB4Y-2. The instrument was used as well in a wide variety of post-war USN aircraft.
Metal data plate reads:
CONTRACT NO. NOA (s) 470
F.S.S.C. NO. 88 I XXX (SCRATCHED OUT - POSSIBLY 335?)
MFR'S PART NO. 586BK - 0115
KOLLSMAN INSTRUMENT DIVISION
OF SQUARE D COMPANY
ELMHURST, NEW YORK
Data imprinted on the bakkelite plastic case back:
CAUTION - DO NOT BLOW IN TUBES
S P S
KOLLSMAN
Very clean. It's a little dirty from years of shelf storage. Nice black bakkelite plastic case with no damage. No dust or bugs or dirt behind the glass. Nice bright yellow white markings; needle looks more yellow than lettering (probably the radium). Perfect panel filler if you are rebuilding fighter panel. Looks like someone thought to cap the pitot static airspeed tube lines to keep out dust, dirt and moisture. Just exceptionally clean graphics. Looks like this one had been OH'ed at some point in time here in PHX AZ by Aviation Instrument Service as noted with the faded paper OH sticker on the side of the case. OH date is not legible and I suspect this was mid 1960s as I am not familiar with that firm. I see 890 scratched on back of instrument case. Perhaps this was a new F.S.S.C. number from the scratch-out on the data plate?
Something of a harder instrument to source. They're an obvious favorite with the fighter crowd. Or the confused bomber guys who are convinced the PB4Y-2 can move its butt that rapidly and don't know any different.
Radium faced? Perhaps. Haven't scanned for it and it doesn't glow on the shelf at night. As such this sale is CONUS ONLY. International purchase will be cancelled as we do not have proper export license for military hardware and if scanned and any radium detected the instrument is confiscated and destroyed by Customs. Much as we like to support restoration projects out-of-country, please be advised this instrument isn't for you.
Last shot in photo series shows drawing of one installed in a F4U Corsair panel.
Ships cheapest via USPS Ground Advantage or FedEx Ground unless you direct otherwise. Questions? Please ask seller. And thanks for looking!
