WWII Aircraft Instrument - 3 1/8" Bendix Pioneer Turn & Slip Indicator AN5820
One nice wartime Bendix Pioneer Turn & Slip Indicator that would've been found in just about anything from a primary or basic trainer up into the big bombers during WWII. It's a variant of the AN 5820-1.
Fragile little plastic data plate on the unit is on the rear of the instrument and it's identified as:
#43534
CONTRACT NO. 77089
F.S.S.C. NO. 88-I-3280
MFR'S PART NO. 1719-1-AF-A1
PIONEER INSTRUMENT
DIVISION OF BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION
BENDIX, NEW JERSEY U.S.A.
Nice metal 3 1/8" instrument. Nice yellow creme markings with a super bright and very RADIUM pointer. Nice sharp graphics. Looks like the mid-war unit with the black plastic bubble. I don't see any dirt or bugs or moisture invasion signs behind the glass. This is a nice one. Complete with the fittings and the air filter. Looks like this one was OH'ed by KARNISH INSTRUMENTS of Lock Haven PA in the later part of 1958 or so says the water transfer sticker on the cabinet.
Nice vacuum (air driven) instrument. I see no drop damage or mods to this one.
This is truly one of those ubiquitous instruments that you'd have spotted in the cockpit of the Stearman or Vultee BT-13, or the P-40 Warhawk or P-38 Lightning - or the Douglas C-47 or Curtiss C-46. And yes, you'd have found this in the B-17 Flying Fortress panel, too. Bendix made thousands upon thousands of these things during the war years. Subsequent units were electrically controlled. This one is the old style static-port instrument. Army airframes. Navy airframes. Yup, interchange here.
Strong and sharp looking instrument. Because it's highly visible as a RADIUM faced wartime instrument, no international sales. I'm serious about that as typically anything this hot gets caught in the international mail scans between Customs entities and it gets confiscated and destroyed. While I enjoy helping international restoration efforts, this is usually a dead-end for these instruments. Let's not go that route as it's survived 80+ years at this point and no need for some doofus in Customs to make a big g-damned deal out of nothing.
Ships cheapest via USPS Ground Advantage or FedEx Ground unless you direct otherwise. Questions? Please ask seller. And thanks for looking!
