N217JB is a 2001 Glastar with complete (to my knowledge) build documentation including photo journal and all logs. The original owner and builder was an electrical engineer and Captain for Delta who passed resulting in the sell to another Delta Captain who owned it for several years until my acquisition in July of 2025.
The reason for my purchase was the local airport was raising my hangar rent on a Mooney from 265 to 1750. No typo. No other hangar options were available, so sold the Mooney buying the Glastar as a replacement as it could land on my farm. The day I delivered the Mooney, a Hangar became available for purchase at a nearby field and I jumped on it.
I had the Glastar fully upgraded in November/December. G3x, GFC500, G5 standby, GTN750xi, Garmin remote com 2, heated Pitot w/AOA, and IFR certification. As fate would have it, a P210 (plane I’ve always wanted) came available at a pricing point I felt fair, and I jumped on it. Afterall, there was more room in the hangar! Unfortunately, fate struck again…
During post flight, a noticed some scrapes on the prop tips of the Glastar. That sent me down a rabbit hole regarding the SB and related AD. As there was no indication a strike occurred outside the scrapes, I dressed the prop in place and test flew it. No issues were noted; however, I contacted a mechanic who stopped by last Tuesday. The mechanic pointed out the blades had a slight rake as pictured and that a true strike had occurred.
The experimental world is very different than the certified world and I’ve got a certified mindset. The prop has to be overhauled. H&H said 3700 for the OH. Additional charges of up to 600 per blade if the straightening is beyond some undefined point and 9K if the hub is damaged. The latter thought to be unlikely in a mild strike but still unknown. The teardown inspection is consistently 13500.
While my plan was to simply be a two-airplane owner, this occurrence and my pending retirement made me reconsider. The Glastar is being sold one of two ways pending timing:
$136,000 as is.
$168,000 with a Triad engine overhaul and HH prop overhaul. Please note overhaul, not teardown. New Cylinders.
Timing - the mechanics stated they are going to try and get to the airplane sometime within the next two weeks to pull the engine and prop. Option one is available until that process starts. Once option two begins, I’m told the process may take up to 14 weeks.
We can use Aerospace Reports or AIC Title to handle the transaction. I will split cost.
