One of the best things about the IFD family, is they are a direct slide-in replacement
for the Garmin GNS 530 & GNS 430. Saving a lot of money and almost no downtime.
Avidyne offers a traditional map view, with an additional third-person synthetic vision
view. The Avidyne provides great terrain awareness in both views, and even offers a
flashlight-like forward terrain view. Avidyne also labels each radio frequency on both
channels, so it's easy to identify which frequency belongs to each entity. The nearest
function highlights each airport on the map, giving you great situational awareness.
Avidyne provides four “FREE” iPad applications, one for learning how to use any of
the IFD family units, one for remotely controlling any of the IFDs from inside the aircraft
and two for connecting to an X-Plane Simulator. Now you can practice using the IFD
without having to buy additional hardware, either on your couch or in a simulator.
The IFD family also has the ability to use an external keyboard. I have found this valuable
in turbulence, so you can hold the keyboard, which now bounces with you instead
of trying to follow the panel around. Another feature of the IFD is that you have the option to
use the touch screen or buttons to interact with the unit, again, very valuable in turbulence
and a nice backup for touch screen malfunctions.

This unit was removed for an avionics upgrade, it has the latest software upgrade, and the navigation database just expired
