Kolb Mark III Ultralight, it has a Rotax 618 75hp 2 cycle engine with oil-injection and electric start with an “E” box. An “E” box means that the electric starter is built into the gear reduction unit. It has a carbon fiber 3-blade propeller. This engine is water cooled via twin radiators. This ultralight also is equipped with a BRS 900lb rocket-deployed parachute. The parachute is mounted and has never been used so it will be necessary to have it serviced/repacked.
I built this ultralight from a kit in 1998. The reason I chose Kolb was that this ultralight folds up and can be loaded onto a trailer. The tail feathers fold up and the wings rotate down and fold back to the tail, on edge. Only the wing struts(2) are removed for folding. I built an open custom trailer for it so it could be loaded by one person, me. The reason for 1 person loading and unloading is that you can never count on always having a helper. The trailer is included in this auction. It’s a boat trailer that I modified for this ultralight. It takes approx. 30 min to unload, assemble and to do preflight and engine run-up. After flight, it takes approx. 45 min to fold, load and cover for travel. I made a heavy duty canvas cover to keep everything safe when trailering.
The main fuselage is a factory welded chrome moly steel cage. All steel parts in this kit were factory welded, i.e. main LH and RH wing ribs, the control attachments for ailerons, flaps. Internal wing spar and tail tube strengthener. The wing main spars are 6” diameter aluminum as is the tail tube. Wingspan is 27’ and the length is about 25’. Fuel quantity is two 5 gallon tanks just behind the seats. I did some minor customizing to the cockpit when I was building it. Instead of the 2 “sling” seats that were in the kit I installed 2 gyrocopter fuel tank seats that holds approx 18-19 gal so total fuel capacity is almost 30 gal. I also modified the windshield mounting tubes because I am 6’-6” tall and need a little extra head room to bend and get in. I also modified the throttle position from the factory center position of the airplane(which was very awkward to me) to 1 lever on the left side and 1 lever on the right side.
Gauges are Altimeter, Airspeed, Quad EGT CHT L&R, RPM, Hourmeter, Fuel
I will also be including a couple David Clark headsets, one is active noise cancelling. There is an intercom but is hard to talk to a passenger because of the noise. The Kolb Mark III is a side-by-side seat configuration.
This ultralight is a taildragger and has 3 flap settings, I think they are 15, 20, and 30 degrees though I’m not certain. Takeoff distance with only me in the plane is about 200-300’. Landing distance is about 600’. Total pilot and passenger weight max is 380lbs. I always liked to fly around with flaps set in the first notch to fly low and slow, about 50mph, with a passenger it would be around 60mph. Top speed is about 90mph. This plane has disk brakes and are only meant to slow the airplane after landing and to hold at stop before takeoff. They will not hold the plane from moving to run-up engine.
The fabric on this Kolb is Stits brand fabric system and the paint is Poly-tone paint. The first coat of paint included a UV blocking additive for the top of wings and tail surfaces. It has always been inside a hangar.
