1946 COMMONWEALTH (REARWIN) CW185 AIRFRAME COMPLETE, NO ACCIDENT, HAIL ONLY!

THE COMMONWEALTH CW185 “SKYRANGER” IS AN UPDATED VERSION OF THE PRE-WAR REARWIN 165.

AFTER THE WAR, THE COMPANY WAS REORGANIZED AS COMMONWEALTH AIRCRAFT, AND PRODUCED THE “SKYRANGER” WITH THE 85 HP CONTINENTAL ENGINE THAT WAS COMMON AT THE TIME.

THE SKYRANGER IS A 2 PLACE, SIDE BY SIDE HIGH WING AIRPLANE WITH STICK CONTROLS, AS WAS THE PIPER VAGABOND

OLEO STRUT MAIN LANDING GEAR LIKE THE AERONCA CHAMP.

WITHOUT THE WARTIME INCOME AND NAME RECOGNITION OF THE PIPER, LUSCOMBE, CESSNA AND AERONCA, THE COMMONWEALTH DECLARED BANCRUPTCY SOONER THAN THE OTHERS, IN VERY LATE 1946, EVEN THOUGH THE SKYRANGER HAS SEVERAL INTERESTING FEATURES NOT FOUND IN OTHER, SIMILAR AIRPLANES, INCLUDING FIXED LEADING EDGE SLOTS IN THE LEADING EDGES OF THE WINGS, WHICH PROVIDES MORE CONTROL AT LOW SPEEDS BY INCREASING CLEAN AIRFLOW OVER THE WING.

AS A RESULT OF THE QUICK DEMISE OF THE COMPANY,  THE SKYRANGER IS A RARITY COMPARED TO THE OTHER COMPANIES WHO ALL PRODUCED THOUSANDS OR 10’S OF THOUSANDS OF THEIR MODEL IN THE LATE 1940’S.

APPROXIMATELY 63 SKYRANGERS ARE ON THE U.S. REGISTRY, BUT OF THOSE, I HAVE BEEN TO THE OSHKOSH AND SUN N FUN FLY-INS FOR 34 YEARS STRAIGHT AS AN EXHIBITOR AND NEVER SEEN A SINGLE SKYRANGER.

I HAVE, AS WENTWORTH AIRCRAFT, PURCHASED OVER 6,600 AIRPLANES IN MY CAREER, AND THIS IS THE ONLY COMMONWEALTH SKYRANGER I HAVE EVER SEEN, AND THE FIRST ONE I HAVE EVER BOUGHT!

IF YOU ARE LIKE ME, AND LIKE SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT THEN EVERYBODY ELSE HAS, THIS AIRPLANE MIGHT INTEREST YOU!

THIS AIRPLANE DID NOT CRASH OR HAVE AN ACCIDENT.

IT WAS TIED DOWN OUTSIDE WITHOUT THE FULL CUSTOM BRUCE’S WING COVERS, COWL COVERS AND FUSELAGE COVERS INSTALLED (THESE COVERS ARE ALL INCLUDED), WHEN A HAILSTORM CAME BY AND DAMAGED THE CECONITE COVERING ON THE TOPS OF THE WINGS AND FUSELAGE.

THERE WAS NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE THAT OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF THE HAIL.

AS CAN SOMETIMES HAPPEN WITH AN OLDER AIRPLANE, THE HORIZONTAL STABILATORS STUCK IN THE ATTACHMENT TUBES, MAKING REMOVAL DIFFICULT.  IT APPEARS THE PERSON DOING THE REMOVAL HIT THE TUBING TO BREAK IT FREE, AND BROKE A WELD ON EACH HORIZONTAL, AN EASY FIX.

THE ONLY OTHER HANDLING DAMAGE IS TO THE TIP BOW ON THE RIGHT WING, WHICH IS SLIGHTLY DENTED, LOOSENING THE FABRIC IN THAT AREA.

EXCEPT FOR THOSE 2 SMALL AREAS, THE ONLY DAMAGE IS RINGWORM MARKS AND TEARS TO THE UPPER FABRIC (1 HAILSTONE CAME ALL THE WAY THROUGH AND PUT A SMALL TEAR IN ONE WING BOTTOM SKIN), SO A SIMPLE RECOVER WILL TAKE CARE OF THE ISSUE.

THE TOP OF THE FUSELAGE TURTLEDECK, THE TOPS OF THE WINGS, AILERONS, HORIZONTALS AND ELEVATORS ALL HAVE HOLES OR RINGWORM MARKS.

THIS AIRCRAFT HAS BEEN UPGRADED OVER THE YEARS, AND NOW HAS:

CLEVELAND WHEELS AND BRAKES

SCOTT TAILWHEEL ASSEMBLY

THE ENGINE WAS UPGRADED IN THE 1970’S TO A LYCOMING 115 H.P. 0-235.

OF COURSE THE EXTRA 30 H.P. PRODUCES FAR SNAPPYIER PERFORMANCE THAN STOCK!

THIS ENGINE IS NOT INCLUDED HERE, BUT THE CONVERSION ENGINE MOUNT IS UNDAMAGED, THE ENGINE CONTROLS AND WIRES WERE UNBOLTED, NOT CUT, AND THE SPECIAL EXHAUST AND AIRBOX ARE INCLUDED HERE.

THE LYCOMING 0-235 IS ONE OF THE MOST PRODUCED ENGINES IN LYCOMING’S HISTORY, AND ARE READILY AVAILABLE ON THE USED MARKET, FROM US OR OTHERS, NOW OR IN THE FUTURE WHEN YOU ARE DONE WITH THE RECOVER AND READY TO FLY AGAIN. AS YOU MAY KNOW, THE 0235 SERIES CAN BE UPGRADED TO 125 H.P. BY INSTALLING HIGH COMPRESSION PISTONS, OR STICK WITH THE LOW COMPRESSION 115 H.P. PISTONS AND USE AUTO FUEL (THIS ENGINE WAS DESIGNED TO USE 80 OCTANE FUEL).

IN ADDITION TO THE NEAT CONTROL STICKS, NOTE THAT THE TOEBRAKES ARE ORIGINAL, WITH “COMMONWEALTH” CAST INTO THE PEDALS.

I WAS ALSO EXCITED TO SEE THE REALLY COOL INTEGRATED POD WHICH HOLDS A LARGE TACH DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE PILOT, WITH FUEL LEVEL, OIL PRESSURE AND AMMETER AROUND THE PERIPHERY!

VERY UNIQUE! 

IN FACT, THE BEST REASON TO BUY THIS AIRPLANE ISN’T JUST THAT IT IS BASICALLY ONLY A FABRIC RECOVER PROJECT.

NOT EASY, OF COURSE, BUT VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD.

I THINK THE BEST REASON TO BUY THIS AIRPLANE AND RECOVER IT IS BECAUSE YOU WILL HAVE THE ONLY ONE ANYONE YOU KNOW HAS EVER SEEN!!
