You are bidding on a very special historic three-year military trainer J-3 Piper Cub. Built on August 27, 1941, it was purchased in February 1942 by the famous aviator F. C. Wilson. Mr. Wilson took over management of the New Castle Pennsylvania Airport in 1934; and opened a successful flying school. During WWII Mr. Wilson and his aviator wife Maxine “Mickey” Wilson were under contract by the U.S. Government to teach primary training for future military pilots. The Wilson’s built several new hangers and they operated a fleet of J-3 Cubs. It is known that Wilson Aviation trained over 2500 college graduates for flight duty for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army. From 1942 to early 1945 this Cub flew almost 600 flights. Mr. Wilson has signed off all the flights in the original log books and he has also signed off various inspections and repairs. No surprise that he replaced numerous propellers…but this Cub remained in service and intact throughout the war. This airplane has a fascinating history.

 I have listed this special Piper Cub war bird for two friends. They live in Louisville Kentucky and the Cub is hangered at Bowman Field in Louisville. It is currently flying and in annual. A current annual will be performed prior to the sale. The two owners have joined a group that purchased a modern Piper Cub built by LSA Cub Crafters. So, this vintage Cub needs a new home. I am part of this group that purchased the new Cub Crafters.

 After all that tail wheel experience, in 2012 Embry and his partner decided to purchase a J3C Piper Cub. They were attracted to this particular Cub due to its nice condition and full history. Its serial number is 7476. N-number is N40763. It is Light Sport certified.

 The original five log books are complete.

It was disassembled and a lot of work done on it in late 1946. It was re-licensed in 1948 with 2574 hours. 

 Over the next 50 years it was out of service & stored three times for periods of 9, 4, & 16 years.

 In 2005, it was re-licensed with 3776 hours.  A C-85 engine installed in 2007. Floats were installed briefly in 2009 in central Florida & a 12-gallon wing tank installed.

 Embry bought the Cub at end of 2012 & had a Sky-Tec starter and Odyssey battery installed with all of the necessary legal paperwork. Embry also installed new tires, Grove brakes and an ICom radio and intercom. In 2013 Embry found excess foreign material in the oil screen and sump. The engine was completely overhauled with all steel parts magnafluxed with new reconditioned parts installed according to Continental Overhaul Manual X30011 .

 This sweet Cub now has a total air frame time of approximately 4047 hours. The engine has 42 hours since the major overhaul.
