THIS NAVION HAS ONLY 1,648 HOURS TOTAL TIME, WHICH MAKES IT ONE OF THE LOWEST TIME NAVIONS IN EXISTANCE, BUT THAT NUMBER DOESN'T MEAN MUCH HERE
THE IMPORTANT NUMBER TO KNOW IS 2 YEARS SINCE THE MOST COMPLETE AND EXTENSIVE RESTORATION I HAVE EVER SEEN !!
10 YEARS WORTH OF PROFESSIONAL, PAINSTAKINGLY DETAILED RESTORATION AND UPGRADING
THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT THE INTENT OF THIS RESTORATION WAS TO WIN AS GRAND CHAMPION AT OSHKOSH.
OR QUEEN OF THE FLEET AT THE NAVION FLY IN. OR BOTH !!
I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A DETAILED AND PAINSTAKING RESTORATION OUTSIDE OF A WARBIRD.
I WAS AT A SHOP THAT WAS DOING A SHOW QUALITY RESTORATION ON A DEHAVILLAND MOSQUITO A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, AND THE RUNNING OF THE HYDRAULIC LINES INSIDE OF THE WHEEL WELLS GIVES ME THAT SAME, OBSESSIVE FEELING !!
EVERYTHING WAS DISASSEMBLED, CLEANED, ZINC CHROMATED, AND REPLACED WITH NEW IF THE ORIGINAL COULDNT BE MADE PERFECT !!
THE FIREWALL IS BRAND NEW. IT SHINES LIKE A MIRROR
ALL OF THE HYDRAULIC LINES IN THE WHOLE AIRPLANE WERE REPLACED WITH CUSTOM BENT STAINLESS TUBING. AMAZING !!
THIS AIRPLANE HAS BEEN UPGRADED TO THE CONTINENTAL IO-520 BA. 300 H.P. FOR TAKE-OFF, 285 CONTINUOUS, WITH FUEL INJECTION. COMPARE THAT TO THE ORIGINAL 185 H.P. ENGINE !!
THE IO-520BA HAS 1,381 SNEW, 275 STOP OVERHAUL WITH NEW CYLINDERS. THE ENGINE HAS BEEN DETAILED, AND LOOKS FRESH, AND THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IS SPOTLESS
THE PROPELLOR IS THE NEW SMOOTH FORGED HUB HARTZELL, WHICH ELIMINATES ALL AD'S, AND IT HAS 35 HOURS SINCE NEW.
THE PAINT IS COOL, AND FLAWLESSLY APPLIED
THE MEDIUM GREY ULTRA-LEATHER INTERIOR HAS REAL LEATHER ACCENTS, BUT WILL HOLD UP BETTER THAN 100%LEATHER IN THE LONG RUN. IT IS IMMACULATE.
REAL BURL WOOD EDGING ON THE REAR OF THE CANOPY
NEW STYLE 40 GALLON PER SIDE MAIN TANKS, PLUS 20 GALLON BELLY AUX.
OF COURSE IT HAS THE PALO ALTO TAIL AND THE 10-520 GROSS WEIGHT INCREASE KIT
UPDATED DASH LAYOUT, ALL INSTRUMENTS WERE REPLACED OR OVERHAULED
ALL GLASS IS NEW.
IT'S JUST ALL NEW, OR LIKE NEW
SO AT THE END OF THE 10 YEAR RESTORATION, THE OWNER HAS A BEAUTIFUL AIRPLANE. THE MECHANIC FLYS IT SOME, THE OWNER (IN HIS 70'S)FLYS IT SOME WITH A CHECK PILOT/INSTRUCTOR, BUT NEVER FEELS 100% COMFORTABLE
ON 1 SUCH FLIGHT, THEY FORGET TO PUT THE GEAR DOWN UNTIL IT'S ALMOST TOO LATE.
THE LEFT MAIN LOCKS, THE NOSE LOCKS, BUT THE RIGHT MAIN DOESNT HAVE QUITE ENOUGH TIME TO LOCK, AND FOLDS UP AS THE AIRPLANE ROLLS DOWN THE RUNWAY
THE DAMAGE INCURED AS A RESULT IS:
TWO IMPACT DENTS TO THE RIGHT WING LEADING EDGE. DOES NOT TO GO PAST THE SMALL LEADING EDGE SKIN
OUTBOARD REAR TOP SKIN OF LEFT WING IS WRINKLED, AND THERE IS A CUT UNDER THE WING AND INTO THE FLAP MIDSPAN
THE RIGHT WING HAS 2 IMPACTS FROM T POSTS ON THE LEADING EDGE SKIN
THE LEFT HORIZONTAL HAS A SERIOUS IMPACT ON THE LEADING EDGE FROM THE T-POST THAT SCRAPED THE LEFT WING
THE AILERON COUNTERWEIGHT ON THE LEFT. SIDE IS RIPPED OFF, AND 2 OF THE AILERON HINGES ARE BENT SLIGHTLY
THERE IS A SLIGHT WRINKLE ON THE TAILCONE UPPER SKIN, RIGHT UNDER WHERE THE CANOPY OPENS, AND A GPS ANTENNA SITS. I CAN'T QUITE TELL WHY IT'S WRINKLED, AND IT MUST BE JUST SKIN, BECAUSE INSIDE THE TAIL, ALL OF THE BULKHEADS APPEAR OK.
THE WHOLE INSIDE OF THE TAILCONE IS ZINC CHROMATED, AND LOOKS LIKE NEW.
NEW BATTERY BOX AND STUFF BACK THERE AS WELL
THE LOWER CAP ON THE RUDDER IS DENTED, AND IT VERY SLIGHTLY WRINKLED THE EXPOSED ENDS OF THE RUDDER SKINS THEMSELVES
THE SMALL FAR REAR BULKHEAD IS CRACKED.
THE PROP IS DAMAGED ON ALL 3 TIPS, 2 PRETTY LIGHT AND ONE MORE
THE SPINNER IS NOT HURT
THE EXHAUST, COWL FLAPS, LOWER KEEL AND UPPER COWLINGS ARE UNDAMAGED
NO ENGINE MOUNT DAMAGE VISIBLE
THE BALANCE OF THE FUSELAGE IS PERFECT
ALL OF THE GLASS IS PERFECT
CLEVELAND WHEEL AND BRAKE UPGRADE, AND THE TIRES STILL LOOK NEW (OF COURSE)
CANOPY IS PERFECT, AND SHUTS AND OPENS AND LOCKS PERFECTLY
WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY? 1 PERFECT NAVION, WITH SOME WORK REQUIRED.
