PIPER INTRODUCED THE COMANCHE AS A 4 PLACE, ALL METAL, CROSS COUNTRY MACHINE!

WITH IT’S LAMINAR FLOW WING, LOW WING STEP UP HEIGHT, RUGGED RETRACTABLE LANDING GEAR AND GOOD ECONOMY, MANY PEOPLE THINK IT IS A PERFECT AIRPLANE.

EXCEPT THOSE PEOPLE WHO BELIVE THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTION FOR HORSEPOWER, AND A LEISURLY CRUSIE IS NOT THEIR IDEA OF FUN!

FOR THOSE PEOPLE, PIPER TOOK THE SAME SLEEK FUSELAGE AND WING, AND ADDED A 6 CYLINDER, 250 HORSEPOWER 0-540 ENGINE.

WITH LITTLE MORE WEIGHT THAN THE 180 H.P. VERSION,  THE SAME AIRFRAME, AND 70 MORE HORSEPOWER,  ALL ASPECTS OF PERFORMANCE WERE GREATLY IMPROVED!

THE 250 COMANCHE IS THE MOST PRODUCED VERSION OF THIS AIRFRAME, BECAUSE THE TAKEOFF ROLL IS SHORT, THE CLIMB IS FANTASTIC, AND IT CAN DO 180 MPH WITHOUT BREAKING A SWEAT IN CRUISE!!

THE FIRST 3 YEARS OF THE 250 COMANCHE WERE HAMPERED BY A LACK OF AVAILABLE FUEL CAPACITY.  USING THE SAME 60 GALLON FUEL TANKS OF THE 180, THE EARLY 250’S WERE NOT ABLE TO PLANE FOR 4 HOURS IN THE AIR, AND MOST CAUTIOUS PILOTS ONLY FIGURED ON 3 ½ HOURS WITH RESERVES, WHICH ISN’T AS FAR AS MOST PEOPLE FEEL COMFORTABLE PER LEG.

IN 1961, PIPER ADDED 30 GALLONS OF AUX FUEL, 15 GALLONS PER SIDE, SO THIS AIRPLANE, AND ALL 1961 AND UP COMANCHES HAVE ENOUGH TO GO UP TO 6 HOURS WITHOUT REFUELING (MOST PEOPLE DON’T GO THAT FAR IN 1 HOP VERY OFTEN, BUT 90 GALLONS ALLOWS YOU TO CHOOSE THE STOPPING POINT, NOT THE AIRPLANE!

THERE ARE ALSO MANY SITUATIONS WHERE GAS MAY BE UNAVAILABLE OR EXPENSIVE AT YOUR DESTINATION, AND THE 90 GALLONS THAT THIS AIRPLANE HAS ONBOARD ALLOWS FOR MANY OUT AND BACK TRIPS WITHOUT REFUELING!!

THE ROLL AXIS IS CONTROLLED BY A CENTURY IIB SYSTEM, WHICH GIVES WING LEVELING, HEADING CONTROL WITH THE D.G. HEADING BUG, AND THIS SYSYEM HAS THE OPTIONAL RADIO COUPLER.

TO ALLOW THE AUTOPILOT TO USE THE “CLEAN” SIGNAL PUT OUT BY MODERN GPS SYSTEMS, THIS AUTOPILOT ALSO HAS A D.A.C. GPSS SYSYTEM (GPS STEER), WHICH GIVES FAR MOR PRECISION FOR CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT.

CENTER BELLY SKINS WILL NEED REPLACEMENT, 2 OF WHICH SIMPLY SCREW ON!

BOTH FLAPS HAVE SCRAPING ON THEIR INBOARD EDGES, BUT AS YOU CAN SEE, REPLACING THE REINFORCEMENTS ON THE CORNERS SHOULD ELIMINATE THE DAMAGE.

THERE IS NO SCRAPING TO THE LOWER COWL OR NOSEGEAR DOOR (A TESTIMENT TO A GOOD LANDING)

NO DAMAGE TO THE FUSELAGE OTHER THAN THE CENTER BELLY AREA, NO TWEAKS OR WRINKLES ELSEWHERE!

NO DAMAGE TO EITHER WING, OR AILERON, OR TIP!

NO DAMAGE TO ANY OF THE LANDING GEAR!

NO DAMAGE TO THE TAIL FEATHERS.

DISASSEMBLED PROPERLY AND READY TO TRAILER EASILY.

THE 0-540 ENGINE WAS VERY HIGH TIME AND HAD SUFFERED A PROP STRIKE, SO WE HAVE REMOVED IT FROM THIS AIRFRAME (UNBOLTED, NO CABLES CUT) AND THE ENGINE, PROP AND ENGINE ACCESSORIES ARE NOT INCLUDED HERE.
